Our History

On April 16, 1886 a group of farmers met in Coin, Iowa to adopt by-laws, rules and regulations and to make all needful provisions for the business of Morton Farmers Mutual Insurance Association.  Little is recorded of the early history of Morton Mutual other than board meetings beginning in August 1886.

Many mutual insurance companies were formed out of necessity in the mid to late 1800’s and early 1900’s to provide protection for local farmers from fire and lightning events.

In 1969, Fremont Mutual Insurance Association in Sidney, Iowa and Farmers Mutual Insurance Association in Villisca, Iowa joined with Morton Farmers Mutual Insurance Association to form Southwest Iowa Mutual Insurance Association with the home office in Coin, Iowa.  In 1977, the home office was moved to Clarinda and is currently located at 401 S 16th St, Clarinda, Iowa.

Over the years the insurance protection provided by Southwest Iowa Mutual has evolved and broadened from the original “fire and lightning” perils but the mutual principle remains the foundation of this company.  Mutually, we can successfully insure, protect and restore one another’s property because we know the needs and conditions our communities face.  We know because the agents, directors and staff are local community members.  It truly is neighbor helping neighbor.

Policyholders are the owners of this local mutual.  This was true in 1886 and it remains the same today.  Southwest Iowa Mutual is committed to providing quality insurance coverage for your needs and your success.  Contact us or one of our independent agents today.
